  • Question

  • I mistakenly deleted the root site collection of my SharePoint Online tenant which is not found in the recycle bin also. Can I recover it? If so, how?

  • Hi,

have you checked "SharePoint admin center" recycle bin?

    1. Sign in to Office 365 with your work or school account.

    2. Go to the SharePoint admin center.

    3. On the ribbon, select Recycle Bin.

    4. In the Recycle Bin, select the check box next to the site collection that you want to restore.

    5. On the ribbon, select Restore Deleted Items.

  • As already mentioned in my question, the site collection is not available in the recycle bin.

  • Since the site collection is not found in the recycle bin, it cannot be restored even via PowerShell.

  • Are you sure? I haven't tried but you often see stuff in PowerShell that is hidden in the GUI. This article on how to re-create the root site collection implies that it is there, just hidden.

  • I did try both the options. Powershell as well as GUI. Powershell says no such site exists. And in the GUI, it just gives me the error message "The site collection already exists. Please enter a different address."

  • if it is completely gone, then i would contact the support and ask them to restore from backup. if their is not too much data then you will be able to recreate it.
