What is included in a SharePoint Backup RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello everyone!

I had a powershell script to automate my backups and remove old backups over a period of time.  I am trying to prepare information for a disaster recovery event.  What is included in a SharePoint backup file?  Are the Microsoft applications such as word, excel, etc included in the backup or do I have to backup those files that were uploaded and saved on SharePoint? Also, are any web applications I developed and scripts saved in the backup?  If so, when I perform a restore to a SharePoint site is there any other work that needs to be performed to get back to a normal state?

    Thanks in Advance!

  • Assuming your going to do the farm backup then all your content (including your uploaded files) and all the configuration e.g. web apps etc. I am not sure what you meant by scripts?

You will need to keep an eye on any changes you made to your SharePoint hive manually. If you are using any third part components those wont be backed up. If you are using remote blob storage then you will also need to plan in case if you are using Remote RBS Provider.

For restoring go through the following article for Farm backup.

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee428311(v=office.14).aspx

I would personally check all the customizations (if any) after the restore and make sure they work as expected.

  • The full farm backup (Backup-SPFarm -Full) includes all the SharePoint-attached databases as well as certain configuration objects from the SharePoint Configuration database (e.g. Web Applications, Service Applications, etc.).

  • couple of things you have to take the manual record.
