Failure to configure updates after W7 reboots RRS feed

  • after searching for a solution several days now and trying most of them, it is still no go.

    here is where I am now: updated Vista Pro to Win-7 Pro, just like half-dozen similar PC's in the office. This one came back up and found 57 updates (just like the other PC's did) and after I downloaded and installed them, it shows all of them are "successfully" installed and reboot is needed. Here is where it starts to get interesting. When the PC reboots, it is trying to install the updates, but instead, I get the screen that says "Failure to configure updates, reverting changes"; then it reboots the PC once more, and when I am able to log in, a pop-up window shows up and says that windows could not install updates.

    I have disabled AVG 2011 via msconfig - no go

    I have cleaned up SoftwareDistribution\Downloads - no go

    I have removed MSXML 4.0 SP2 and installed SP3 - no go

    there were some CMD commands I tried (I forgot what those are) - no go


    What I have is this:

    1) the windows update history shows error 80071A90 for all updates that were attempted to install

    2) the event log (System) shows "Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80071a90:" <Update name> (EventID:20; Source:WindowsUpdateClient)

    3) I have tried to look into CBS.log file, and I cannot read it for the life of me.... here is where I am hoping for the community help.

    Can somebody please look into it and help me with the next step in getting this resolved?

    to fix it. If this doesn't fix it, exclude this update from being installed:

  • Hello,

    I have installed and ran the KB947821 tool. Once the tool ran, I have rebooted the PC and installed all pending updates but KB979538. All updates were installed properly, even after the reboot (where they were failing before). I went back to the Windows Update and installed remaining KB979538 (USB Display??) with no issues.
