Customize the "Available Templates" in Word 2010 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have an odd request.  In part of my Office 2010 deployment we have created several templates for standard documents.  If I was going to create a new document from that template I would open Word, click on File > New and I see "Home" and "Available Templates" and under that list is "My Templates."  Is there any way to add my templates to the list under "Home" instead of having to first click "My Templates" to open a dialog box where I would then select the desired template?

Let me know if I need to clarify.

    Thanks!

  • Hi there,

To the best of my knowledge, there is no way to put your customized templates directly under the Home section.

But you can add a new folder in the Custom Template section, which will be a little convenient.

  • Its a nice way to handle Templates.
BUT - Beware - There seem to be a bug!

When the Templates have been rolled out this way - if you alter the XML to add/remove templates, it does NOT reach the client....

    Described here:

  • Hi, fortunately in the client environment I deployed this to they use Group Policy and specifically GPP (Group Policy Preferences).

All I did to "force" Word to reload the template each time was establish a policy to delete the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Common\Spotlight\Content

Also, it suited the environment as 99% of the time the users are local to the network and reloading the xml file and caching any graphics did not impact the network.

    HTH.
