No RDP Access to (physical) Windows Servers 2016 Datacenter running Hyper-V after unscheduled shutdown due to power failure

    Question

  • Hello everybody,

we had to restart multiple windows servers manually (on-premise) the other day after an unforeseen power failure. After arriving back at the office we were unable to RDP into any of those servers afterwards. The virtual machines were running and we were also able to use Hyper-V Manager remotely to check on the virtual machines.

After some research we found a "workaround" that involves restarting the Hyper-V Servers. We did that last night outside office hours and it worked. But this can't be the solution!

We are a rather small company and we can perform such tasks outside of office hours. But what about high availability systems?

    Some of our system specs:

The servers are HP Proliant (various versions/ generations) all running Windows Server 2016 Datacenter. Remote Access is done from multiple Windows systems (Win 10, Windows Server 2012R2, Windows Server 2016) all within the same domain. The virtual machines also run a variety of OS (Windows Server 2003 and newer) - we however, don't have the feeling that this was related in any kind.

I'd appreciate any help on that topic. Please let me know if you have further questions.

    Best regards.
