please help me understand DNS Query RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

    I know in general how DNS works but still not able to understand below;

    We have 2 DNS servers installed (windows DNS , OS Win2k12 Std).

    to access the internet sites we have not set our ISPs ip anywhere so how we are able access internt and other sites ?

    I remember in windows 2003 DNS server I had given ISP provided DNS servers ip to access the internet.

    Please help me understand.

  • By default the DNS servers will have recursion enabled and  use root hints when it cant resolve something locally, so when your DNS server gets a query it doesn't know it sends it up to the root hint servers.

    If you want to only use forwarders, remove the "use root hints if no forwarders are available" checkbox

    I offer advice as is, and you use that advice at your own risk.

  • Dave Thanks for your reply,

    I checked and yes "Use root hints if no forwarders are available" option is selected in my environment.

    so it means, my DNS server is referring DNS servers listed in root hints.
