  • Question

  • Is it possible to take a site collection backup (i.e. stsadm) from ShaerPoint 2007 RTM and restore it on a SharePoint 2007 SP2 server?

  • Hi,

You can restore the Dbs to any SQL Server that is runnning the same version of SQL Server higher. As an example you couldnt take a db from SQL 2008 R2 (v10.5.1600.1) restore it to SQL 2008 (v10.0.4000)..  Looks like he stopped upgrading at SP2... Like Steve said ensure the binaries, custom or OOB are the same for each SharePoint server in the farm...

  • In an ideal world, yes, although there are some steps you can take to ensure that the process is as smooth as possible.

    • Ensure that any custom code the site used in RTM is present in the SP2 server
    • Ensure that any site definitions and content types are also present on the SP2 server
Furthermore, have you been using the same version of SQL Server on both versions of SharePoint?

    Nope.

    • SP 2007 RTM uses SQL Server 9.0.1399
    • SP 2007 SP2 uses SQL Server 9.0.3042

It appears the former app owner was in the process for updating the servers.
