SharePont 2016 licensing for MIM use RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Previously I've always used foundation versions of SharePoint for FIM/MIM which didn't require any licensing. MIM SP1 now supports SharePoint 2016, but there isn't a fondation version anymore.

Does anyone know if any SharePoint licenses are requried if it is just being for the MIM portal?

  • Hi,

Use of the MIM Synch service with SharePoint 2016  does not require a special license. The MIM Synchronization service can be downloaded from the Volume Licensing Center -- you should have access if you have purchased Win Server 2012 licenses.

Please refer to https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt627723(v=office.16).aspx  for more details

You will need a GitHub account for access. See the section 'Download the solutions files that you need' for more details. > Microsoft Identity Manager 2016 is available for download from the Microsoft Volume Licensing Center. (Log in and search on the product name.) > On your MIM server, be sure to install KB3092179.

    Hope this helps!

  • Hi
it's not exactly true to say you do not need a license
I found this link is the best source to answer your question
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/2487.how-to-license-fim-2010-and-mim-2016.aspx
you need a license for your server and for the sql instance hosting your MIM databases.
It says: Windows Server licenses will allow customers to install the FIM Server software, meaning MIM Portal and Sync Service.
If you install SharePoint 2013 Foundation with you your MIM Portal no license is required. Later version of SharePoint would require licenses for SharePoint Server and CALs
MIM CAL is necessary for each user object using a MIM Portal feature including SSPR.
It says: If the FIM Portal, Service, or Certificate Management component is going to be deployed, a FIM CAL is required for each user which is managed by FIM. If you will only be using the FIM Sync Service, CALs are not required

  • SharePoint 2016 requires a server license in addition to the base MIM server license that is bundled with Windows Server.

    Thanks,
