  • Hi,

A gateway is a SMTP server often located in a DMZ that is placed between the internet and an e-mail server on the LAN.

An Exchange server is an e-mail server located on the LAN where users mailboxes are located.

  • Hi,

An email gateway is a SMTP server(like Leif metioned) in charge of filter virus or spam for your organization.

An exchange server is the main part of your email system, it stores your mailbox, your users and all kinds of exchange roles and components.

If I misunderstand you please let me know.

    Best Regards!
