GPO to change search provider for IE11 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Everybody,

    I tried to change search provider for IE11 over GPO in Windows7 but it fails. I can see that my search provider added and set by default in IE properties after GPO applied but it returns to BING after first search made. Any suggestions?

    GPO applied to:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{123}
    SuggestionsURL:REG_SZ:https://www.google.com/complete/search?q={searchTerms}&client=ie8&mw={ie:maxWidth}&sh={ie:sectionHeight}&rh={ie:rowHeight}&inputencoding={inputEncoding}&outputencoding={outputEncoding}
    OSDFileURL:REG_SZ:https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/IEGallery/GoogleAddOns
    FaviconURL:REG_SZ:https://www.google.com/favicon.ico
    DisplayName:REG_SZ:Google
    URL:REG_SZ:https://www.google.com/search?q={searchTerms}&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:{language}:{referrer:source}&ie={inputEncoding?}&oe={outputEncoding?}
    ShowSearchSuggestions:REG_DWORD:0x1 (1)

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes
    DefaultScope:REG_SZ:{123}

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes
    DefaultScope:REG_SZ:{123}

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes
    DefaultScope:REG_SZ:{123}

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{123}
    DisplayName:REG_SZ:@ieframe.dll,-12512
    URL:REG_SZ:http://www.google.com/search?q={searchTerms}
    (Default):REG_SZ:Google

  • I have tried many variations for IE to get google as default search provider with GPO but seems this workaround is working only for new redeployed computers when user is logging first time. At least in our environment. Found one more acknowledgment on this case:

  • Hi,

    As you mentioned in post, you could see search provider added and set google by default in IE properties, but it returns to Bing after first search made.

    I refer to this website below and set google as my search provider, meanwhile, Bing also lies in my computer. However, I don’t come with your condition.

    Here is what we captured for this registry key:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes]

    "DefaultScope"="{CBFEC264-7773-4B09-BEAE-D8868A9A9478}"

    "DefaultPackCorrection"=dword:00000001

    "KnownProvidersUpgradeTime"=hex:e8,13,90,8c,97,96,d0,01

    "DownloadRetries"=dword:00000002

    "Version"=dword:00000004

    "UpgradeTime"=hex:08,2a,b1,8f,97,96,d0,01

    "DefaultPackNTCorrection"=dword:00000001

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{CBFEC264-7773-4B09-BEAE-D8868A9A9478}]

    "DisplayName"="Google"

    "OSDFileURL"="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/IEGallery/GoogleAddOns"

    "FaviconPath"="C:\\Users\\Administrator\\AppData\\LocalLow\\Microsoft\\Internet Explorer\\Services\\search_{CBFEC264-7773-4B09-BEAE-D8868A9A9478}.ico"

    "FaviconURL"="https://www.google.com/favicon.ico"

    "ShowSearchSuggestions"=dword:00000001

    "URL"="https://www.google.com/search?q={searchTerms}&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:{language}:{referrer:source}&ie={inputEncoding?}&oe={outputEncoding?}"

    "SuggestionsURL"="https://www.google.com/complete/search?q={searchTerms}&client=ie8&mw={ie:maxWidth}&sh={ie:sectionHeight}&rh={ie:rowHeight}&inputencoding={inputEncoding}&outputencoding={outputEncoding}"

    Please confirm with us that how you deploy this settings: GPP or IEAK configuration package.

    What’s more, I suggest to check the Internet options to see whether google has been set as the default search provider, in addition, you could also remove Bing to see the result.
