Exchange Servers are not setup to be Active Directory domain controllers.  You can promote those servers to a Domain Controller if you wish, but its highly recommended to leave them as member servers.

  • Hi

Following needs to be consider for Exchange server setup to be run.

    1. The full installation option of Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 must be used for all servers running Exchange 2013/2016 server roles or management tools.

    2. You must first join the computer to the appropriate internal Active Directory forest and domain.

    3. Some prerequisites require you to reboot the server to complete installation.

    4. Install the latest Windows updates on your Exchange server.

You just need to join the Server to your active directory domain controller, no need to make your exchange server to be act as domain controller, it will work as member server, proper account permissions required to start installation over Exchange Server.

  • Thank you so much, This is the exact answer I needed. Really appreciated. Reading through a couple of proper Exchange books, I could not get that clarification. Thanks again.
