Hyper V VMs - Crash, Checkpoint, backup and restore RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello

I have hyper v vms for my skype for business setup....I have created checkpoint for all vms...but just in case if a vm crashes and is unable to roll back to checkpoint...can I create another VM and use this snapshot files and make it run as the crashed VM?Is it possible?what is the best way to backup and restore hyper-v VM's on a external harddisk?

  • checkpoints are not backups!  Unless you're running Hyper-V 2016, you should not leave checkpoints running.

    What will happen:

    1. Run out of disk space

    2. VMs will all pause or go to saved state due to lack of disk space

    3. You'll need more disk space or alternative disks/solutions to get some free disk space to manage your checkpoints.

Merge your checkpoints now and get a real backup tool.

Windows backup, Unitrends, Veeam, etc, there are any number of backup tools, depending on your budget and what you're after.

Just to reiterate, checkpoints are not a backup solution
