IRM not working (Account Certification Service is not available) RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have several excel files that I protected by restricting access to them using the free Microsoft IRM service. This service has worked fine for about a year now and just recently (End of July), it stopped working and now I am locked out of those files.

The Error I get when I open the file is:

" Information Rights Management Configuration Wizard cannot complete.

     An Error has occurred.

Your computer cannot be configured at this time because the Account Certification Service is not available. Please run this wizard again later. "

The wizard is not something that I installed on the PC, I just turned on access restrictions from Excel (File > Protect Workbook >  Restrict Access )

I suspect the Service that is providing the Account Certification service is down. It might be as simple as getting that server back up.

I need to get access to these files desperately. Please help!

  • Thanks. I was not aware that this is a trial system. I will remove the usage of the access restriction as soon as I have access to the files.

Is there a way to get access back to the files somehow?

  • To my knowledge we will have to wait for the service to be restored (they are working on that according to the blog). Then you can remove protection from your files by opening them and adjusting the rights I guess. I do not belive it can be "hacked" easily some way - that would have made the service useless in the first place...

  • The service should be back up now. Please test and let us know.

If it IS, you should start decrypting your documents. If you need them to remain encrypted, please use the RMS for Individuals, ADRMS, or Azure RMS to encrypt them again.

  • I have only just discovered that a very sensitive file with rights management cannot be accessed. And then found this page. I URGENTLY need this unencrypted. Can Microsoft help?
