Delete old user profile - ntuser.dat in use RRS feed

  • Question

  • We moved to new Windows server last January. I created new user accounts and copied data from old user profiles to new for some user. I want to delete old user profile for one user. I think that this profile is no longer in use. I tried to delete it but it wrote that ntuser.dat is in use.

Is it safe to delete this user profile using another account?

  • ntuser.dat is private system file of that user. If you have privillage to delete that user, then you can delete. Otherwise take ownership and do it. more Info to take ownership http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421

  • While you are talking about servers, I have found a reboot has cleared that "locked" message in the workstation realm. Perhaps it will in the server realm as well. Otherwise, booting to the recovery console off the Windows Server CD should serve the same purpose.

As far as your last question, yes, you can delete that user profile from another account. Worse case scenario is you will cause that user to lose anything stored in that profile if you later find out that account is still used.

  • Unfortunately this did not work for me. Took ownership of the NTUSER.DAT file as suggested, made no difference.

  • In that folder ntuser.dat & ntuser.dat.txt files are there. You have to use only ntuser.dat. Not that .txt file.

  • Reboot the server , thats the only option as user profile threads sometimes gets locked in registry hives.
