DPM 2012R2 MMC crashs when open Reporting RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

we have a strange problem with our DPM2012R2 installation.

The backup and restore works fine. After a not uccessful upgrade from DPM2012 to DPM2012R2 one year or longer ago, i notice today that the DPM mmc crashs when i try to open the reports. I found following entry in the Application Event-Log:

The description for Event ID 999 from source MSDPM cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:
An unexpected error caused a failure for process 'mmc'.  Restart the DPM process 'mmc'.

    Problem Details:
<FatalServiceError><__System><ID>19</ID><Seq>0</Seq><TimeCreated>25.11.2015 10:08:58</TimeCreated><Source>DpmThreadPool.cs</Source><Line>163</Line><HasError>True</HasError></__System><ExceptionType>NullReferenceException</ExceptionType><ExceptionMessage>Object reference not set to an instance of an object.</ExceptionMessage><ExceptionDetails>System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

       at Microsoft.Internal.EnterpriseStorage.Dls.UI.ReportingPage.Reporting.UpdateReportingPage()</ExceptionDetails></FatalServiceError>

the message resource is present but the message is not found in the string/message table

It is possible to open the reports via HTML on the SQL server (installed on a different server). There it is not possible to change values in the report (for example the date range in the DiskUtilizationReport - but this is maybe correct in the web view).

Has anybody seen this before an can help me?

    Kind regards

  • Hello srkonus,

I have the same problem here. DPM is 4.2.1338. I'm not sure when I last used the reports. Must have been with CU5 or something like that.
Now I see the same error:

  • Hi,

cause you said that there was a not successful Upgrade a year ago, I think your SQL Reporting Services are crashed.

for my experience, I would recommend to reinstall SCDPM and SQL from scratch, that's the fastest way to repair Reporting.

    Backup SQL DB
    Note SCDPM Version
Uninstall SCDPM and SQL, keep Disk RP from SCDPM
    Install SQL
    install SCDPM
    Recover SCDPM DB

everything is like before and reporting will work.

  • Hi all,

    i found this threat:

    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/0ec22da7-c755-4558-bbe9-0c3c7f1ff145/restoring-premigration-dpm-database-reporting-tab-issue?forum=dpmsetup

There is the same problem and i have also no values in the dbo.tbl_DPS_Reports table. Now i am looking for an example for these values.

    Can anybody post his entries?

  • Hi,

if i backup the database the "missing/wrong" entries are in the backup. So i reinstall DPM with DPM database all entries are fine. Now i recover my database backup and in my opinion i write the "missing/wrong" tables back into my new DPM database.

    Is my thinking wrong?

    Kind regards

I think that using the old DPM DB can not work. I backup the DB, uninstall and reinstall DPM (with a new DB) and recover my old DPM DB i also recover the missing/wrong entries in the database. So i overwritte the clean entries with the old one.

After DB restore the new DB looks like the old one. Where is the improvement?

    Kind regards

  • Hello,

I could solve this error with UR9 installation:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3112306

This behavior is listet in the fixed issues section.

In the update process there are some SQL statements being executed, but I did not dig into the details.

  • Have had same issue with console crashing on reports and can confirm that problem was solved after update to UR 9.
    Monday, February 29, 2016 1:07 PM
  • I installed the UR9 with SCCM and have still the problem. Also a manual installation of the UR9 did not solve the problem for me.

  • Same problem here. Reporting not working and crashes console. I am on UR9.

  • install UR10 for DPM 2012 R2

    FIX:

"The DPM Console crashes when you try to open any of the six built-in DPM reports"
