Hybrid with Edge Mailflow

    Question

  • Hi All,

I am setting up a Hybrid with Edge. This is something I haven't previously done.

When you include an Edge, what happens to mail flow? Does the Hybrid servers pass the mail to the Edge, or does the MBX server do this and the Hybrid just turns into a proxy?

    Thanks,

    Ray

  • Mailflow goes through the Edge.  You don't have to do it that way, you can create a path between Exchange Online and an Exchange 2013 mailbox server and connect directly.  You'd probably want to lock down the IP addresses in this case to the EOP set.

  • Hi Ray,

The mail flow between the on-premises Exchange and the cloud is handled by the Edge server. With the help of the two pairs of send/receive connectors created by the Hybrid Wizard, the cloud to on-premises emails are delivered to the Edge server and the on-premises to cloud emails are received by the Edge server. It works as a smart host and relay server, not just a proxy. You can refer to the following official article to better understand the mail flow in an Exchange Hybrid organization with Edge server: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh134662(v=exchg.150).aspx
