DPM2012 SAN based recovery with EMC VNX- LUN sizing RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi team, I am trying to use DPM2012 to backup exchange servers with EMC VNX's SAN snapshot. I read the EMC white paper for this,I have some more questions about the LUN needed for replica and recovery point. how shall I size the LUNs to be prepared if I need weekly full backup and daily incremental ,assuming the exchange DB is 1TB? is there a simple tool to do sizing? once size done, can I still increase any time in future? I have two exchange server to be backup. also want to understand if there is any SAN requirements like connections for the backup setup ? the normal backup still go through the network backup while the initial replica can go through the SAN clone or snapshot? hope to get some advice here, thanks!

Thanks and best regards, -- KF

  • Hi Kongfunpanda

Please find below link the support storage, as well as calculate storage capacity

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh757941.aspx

the link below shows you DPM LUN Capacity

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh757757.aspx

It depends on your hardware vendor and how to expand a volume. some hardware vendors support online expansion. which means that there is no problem if you present 2 TB storage and after a while you needed to expand it.

  • thanks. a few more questions

    1. with the sizing tool spreadsheet from microsoft, the replica is a fix amount,e.g.1TB for a DB. but the replica will increase while sync with source?  express full is only backup the difference like sync, right?

    2. when i do long term full and incremental back to tape from dpm to backup the exchange server data, how shall I recover it from tape?  just normal file backup to tape and later full restore plus incremental tapes?

    thanks

  • 1. The replica in the spreadsheet is representing your ammount of data. The Replica is the same upon Creation and it it allocate space to maintain the replica. This space is calculated automatically when you add a new Protection Group. This equation allocate twice the size of the replica and recovery Points.

The full backup is express full backup and the sync in difference. Read the link below to understand DPM terminology.

    2. If you run Full backup Daily then you will onlyl the tape where the backup is residing. You dont need incremental tapes to reach to full backup. This is what differ DPM from other Backup Programs. First it takes the replica (full backup) then move Changes to the DPM DB (SYNC or check Points) and use these check Points to build full backup linked to the replica.

  • Thanks, so the size of the replica won't change ? only recovery point LUN may increase?

for SAN based recovery, the initial SAN clone of the exchange DB is a permanent copy or I have to create the SAN clone every day or every week?
