Can't hot-backup a guest, HV Integration VSS event 4098

  • WS2012 Hyper-V host & WS2012 guest. When backups run (Backup Exec 15) on the host, the guest is suspended and this event is logged:

    Log Name:      Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-Integration-Admin
    Source:        Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-Integration-VSS
    Date:          3/9/2017 8:01:27 PM
    Event ID:      4098
    Task Category: None
    Level:         Warning
    User:          NT VIRTUAL MACHINE\615E5F2B-56D3-4100-A841-EC3547136751
    Computer:      hvhost.domain.local
'AVSI-AD-002': The Virtual machine 615E5F2B-56D3-4100-A841-EC3547136751 cannot be hot backed up since it has one or more volumes with differencing areas located on different volumes

    I found this thread:

Followed the various VSSADMIN commands. Same situation: The System Reserved partition is shadowed to C:.

    Shadow Copy Storage association
       For volume: (\\?\Volume{c1ee9046-2117-11e5-93e8-806e6f6e6963}\)\\?\Volume{c1ee9046-2117-11e5-93e8-806e6f6e6963}\
       Shadow Copy Storage volume: (C:)\\?\Volume{c1ee9047-2117-11e5-93e8-806e6f6e6963}\
Used Shadow Copy Storage space: 4.38 MB (0%)
Allocated Shadow Copy Storage space: 2.93 GB (2%)
Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space: UNBOUNDED (100%)

Went through the same (invalid) command guesswork as posted in that thread, with the same (useless) results.

Tried the "Answer," to use VSSADMIN DELETE SHADOWSTORAGE first, to delete it. This was returned:

    C:\Windows\system32>VSSADMIN DELETE SHADOWSTORAGE /For=\\?\Volume{c1ee9046-2117-11e5-93e8-806e6f6e6963}\ /On=C:
vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool
    (C) Copyright 2001-2012 Microsoft Corp.
Error: The specified shadow copy storage association is in use.

Rebooted the computer and tried again; same message. Booted Safe Mode and tried again. Got an "Unexpected error" and was referred to the Application log, where I learned that VSS can't be started in Safe Mode.

How do I change the System Reserved partition to use the System Reserved partition for shadow storage, instead of C:?

  • Can you place parent VHD in a same volume with differencing disks?

  • Serge, thanks for your reply.

Microsoft's event description is incorrect for this event. The VHDX is not a differencing disk. There is one VHDX--non-differencing--and it contains both the System Reserved partition and C: partition.

Here, and in the other thread I cited, the problem is (ostensibly) caused by the Shadow Copy Storage for System Reserved having been located on C:\. I didn't put it on C:; that's where something, presumably Windows or Windows Setup, put it. In the other thread, the tech said the backup software put it there but I'm not sure I believe that.

Regardless, I can't remove it from C: and relocate it on System Reserved, as described above.

  • Still hoping for a procedure to move the snapshot destination. Still can't move the snapshot, still can't backup hot.
