Move DP to new site as part of DR RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is it possible to move a physical server (or VM) with the ConfigMgr 2012 DP role installed, with all Content on it to, a site that has a failed DP? Essentially, we would like to have a "stand-by" DP in our data center that we can just pick up and drop-in to the failed site when the need arises, without having to go through the whole process of reinstalling an OS, installing the DP role, prestaging all the content, taking the content to the site (slow WAN links in Africa), and then re-importing them. Is this possible?

  • Renaming a site system (and by this a distribution point) is not an option. You can move the distribution point to a different location, as long as it's within the same ConfigMgr site, and it will simply start functioning, as the physical location doesn't matter. You do have to adjust the boundaries attached to the distribution point.

  • If you mean moving the distribution point from a secondary site to another secondary site, or from a primary site to a secondary site, then the answer is no.

As long as the site that the distribution point is attached to doesn't change, the distribution point will keep on functioning.

  • Thanks for the swift response Peter!

Just to clarify, we have 12 AD sites (physical sites on different subnets) across slow(ish) WAN links. Each AD site has its own DP server. Each of these DPs are connected to the Primary SCCM 2012 Site in our Data Center. If I understand what you are saying correctly, I would be able to create another DP in our Data Center, keeping it up-to-date with all package content, and then should any of the DPs fail at any of the other AD sites, I can just take this entire server there, and replace it with this one... Is that correct? Also, would renaming the DP to the failed DP name be possible in this scenario, once the DP server has been dopped-in at the failed AD Site? Does SCCM autmatically detect that the DP is now on a new subnet and adjust accordingly?

    Thanks again!

  • Make sure your DNS gets updated of course to reflect the new IP address of the site system when it is moved.

  • Heard there is possibility to move distribution point from one site to another. This is as part of 1710 release. If true, can we have some help on implementing this.
