  • Question

  • As we are currently testing out the FCS on our network, I have one burning question - besides using WSUS, SMS and the manual download of defintion and updates (confirmed by local support), are there any methods that can be used? We use WSUS, but only sync once a day, and roll out updates to clients. The problem I find with using this method, is that defintions will only be downladed once a day - which I find very worrying when dealing with viruses. Is there a way that the defintions can be downloaded more frequently as released?

    Thank you in advance....

  • Did you install the FCS Distribution role on your WSUS server? This will install the 'FCSDS' service, which will cause your WSUS to sync once every hour instead of once per day.

  • will that cause to synchronise only the forefront updates from the windows update server, or any file updates?

  • Hello!  The FCS Distribution service will only sync Definiton Updates for FCS - any remaining updates are only syncronized during your regular scheduled WSUS <-> MU syncs

    Thanks

  • Hi Chris,

Thank you for your response - by doing this method - I assume the clients will also sync the defintions only, every hour? We have set our clients to sync once a day and at 3 at night (specialised labs)? Do I have to adjust any settings on the client machines?

    Thank you for your help,

    Ronnie

  • Hi Ronnie

The sync setting between clients and WSUS is configurable via policy - the lowest value is 1 hour (the highest is once a day).

    Thanks
