    ... recently purchased HP PC running WIN 8.1... all functions initially worked,,, now, when I try to play a CD/DVD, PC recognizes  disk, but fails to play!! HELP... tx

    Can we assume the cd/dvd was recorded on a different drive?  Optical drives are some of the least reliable because of wear & dirt.  Thats why they should not be used for back ups.  You may be able to get it to work by carefully spraying out the drive with compressed air.
