Machines unable to download contents from any unprotected DP's. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

Yes i too see a problem here.

We have a huge environment, all the DP's and sites and MP's are unprotected.

However i see whenever a machine moves from one site to another site, it should ideally contact the local DP available within that site and download the content however, this does not happen. The machine does'nt contact the nearby DP and download.

I have added all the DP's and made sure they contain the package available for download.

The machines within that site, they are able to contact the nearby DP and download the content, the problem is with the machines which are from another site trying to download form the nearby DP.

The seting of SLOW and FAST are set correctly and also the option of "Download content when in unreliable network" is also set.

Ideally it should download the content, but this is not happening.

  • Used protect dps for sites p1,p2,p3 and p4. Leave your central site unprotected.

  • It may be because of the DHCP or ip address of the machines are still on the old site may be worth trying flush DNS.

  • Hi Kamal Kannan,

Certain extent agree with your answer.

But even after reboot of the machines, package is failed to download.

ANd ideally, if any machine is unable to download the package from one DP it should jump to another DP and try to download.

Lets put it this way, if the DP's of one particular site are not added to the package, any machine in that site should try to fallback to another DP and download the package. But, this is not happening, it shoots error as "package failed, content not available".

  • Why are you not protecting your DPs? Client will randomly select a DP based on a few things, but it is best practice to protect your DPs, if you want to prevent network traffic.

  • Hi Garth,

We have 4 primary site and, more number of machines which are roaming clients. We want machine to get the package from any DP's.. We have enough BW allocated to each site.

Question is if the DP's are unprotected, then why are the machines not able to download?

This is NOT the same problem as what you originally post, and they are to distinct issues with very different solutions.

    So for clarity:

    • Is the problem that PC can't download from DP?
    • Are some PCs using the "wrong" DP?

In either case you must look at the clients PCs to determine why they are using a particular DP. DP are selected in the following order:

    • Protect DPs, if there are two protect DPs for a site, then one is selected randomly.
    • Unprotect DPs, AD Site, Local Subnet (Client decide if the DP is local or not), existing network connection, random.

Based on your pervious post, You should protect all DP excepts for the ones at HQ. This will ensure that all client talk to their local DP no matter what and will fallback to HQ if needed.

  • Ok let me be more clear: This is the scenario i have.

    1.   I have 4 sites P1, P2, P3, P4 and 1 central site C00.

    2.   I have roaming clients in all the sites.

    3.   DP's are added to all the sites and also made sure that the package is distributed to them.

    4.   If Machine M1 reporting to site P1 moves to P2, it should ideally contact the DP's in P2 to get the package, this at times is not happening.

  • Hi Garth,

Thank you for the reply and suggestion.!!

I do agree what you are suggesting is a best practice and the ideal way to do.

But out of curiosity and for my own testing purpose, i want to know what might be the reason/ reason for the machines unable to download when unprotected DP's selected, as this is the way SCCM should behave.

    Appreciate your efforts!!
