Where is web.config after installing WSS 3.0? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello Community

My ASP.Net application that was converted to run in Sharepoint failed
    after running successfully for months.

My suspiscion is that the default web.config file is missing because I remember
the web.config file was somewhere along the root of:

        \Inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirecories\<port no>\bin

But since I converted it some time ago I don't remember where the web.config was
and I don't see it when I traverse the path above.

There are web.config files in other ports but they were created with those applications I created in those ports.

I am looking for the default web.config that was created by WSS 3.0 after WSS 3.0 was installed
where can I find that, or where on the path is it supposed be after installing WSS 3.0?

        Thank you
        Shabeaut

  • Hi Shabeaut,

    there is no "default web.config".

SharePoint generates the web.config for each website during site creation based on a template web.config file which is located in

    \program files\common files\microsoft shared\web server extensions\12\config\web.config

But this file is only used as template to create new web.config files and not during processing of a site.

The web.config for your site should be in the \inetpub\wwwroot\wss\virtualdirectories\<port no> directory. If it is not there, then it has been deleted.

    Cheers,
    Stefan

  • Hi,

Open your IIS and go to the site.

Right click on it and then open it will take you to the location.

  • Hi Shabeaut,

    the web.config files are under:

    program files\common files\microsoft shared\web server extensions\14\config\web.config

But there is only ONE web.config, make a search under the right directory to make the just modifications..
