Virtual Machine not booting of ISO RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a Virtual Machine: Virtual1 installed.

When I connect it does not boot into my ISO: Windows Server 2012 Datacenter.iso

    It gives this error:

Boot failure. Reboot and Select proper Boot Device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot Device.

    Even though in File>Settings:

    IDE Controller 1
DVD Drive: Windows Server 2012 Datacenter.iso

    Is my ISO corrupt?

I do not have a DVD-ROM Player installed on my server so I can not go that route.

I also made an ISO of Windows 8.1: win81.iso just to see.

    That gives the same error.

Maybe it is in my ISO making software.

    Any suggestions are welcome.

  • You should be able to download these ISO images from MSFT.  You should not have to create an ISO (is my point).

Or take a CD / DVD (or file folder) and create an ISO from it.

If you create an ISO from a folder it will not be bootable.  If you create an ISO from a CD image that is not 'closed' it will not boot (even it the media was bootable).

I would count it to ISO issues without knowing more.

For ISO creation I have used this for years: http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/ISOrecorder.htm

But again, creating a bootable ISO is different than simply making an ISO.  And you cannot generate a windows installation ISO.
