How to restore XP BKF files under Windows 7 64-bit ? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, I'm new here and cannot find a way to read my current XP backup files under W7. My questions:

    1. Access to older XP backup files (.BKF) is required in order to complete migration. How do I do this?
    2. Is there an equivalent system tool under Windows 7 (64 bit version)?

    Thanks in advance,
    Jose

  • I'm not aware of anything, maybe somebody else does. You should have backed up your files using Windows Easy Tranfer outlined here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/features/windows-easy-transfer.aspx and also see this tutorial http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/help/upgrading-from-windows-xp-to-windows-7

  • Hi Jose,

you need the Windows NT Backup Restore Utility for Windows 7 (KB974674). Go to the page http://support.microsoft.com/kb/974674 and click View and request hotfix downloads , accept the licence agreement, select your Windows Version (32Bit or64Bit), type in your mail adress twice, type the correct captcha and click on request hotfix .

After 1 minute you have a mail with the link and the password to extrat the hotfix. Install it and start the Windows NT Backup Restore Utility (via Start menu, Programs, Accessories, System Tools.) Now you can restore your old data.

  • Hi Andre,

Thanks for hint. The hotfix seems to be what I need (from reading the description) but I'm not sure which version to use (x64? or IA64?). I'm running W7 Home Premium on a Intel Centrino notebook. Any idea?  I also noticed the hot fix (both versions) will unpack in a directory but, how do I install them?

just dumb questions from a newby :)

  • make a right click on the computer icon on your desktop and select properties. Now look under System -> System type which Windows do you have.

If you have a 32Bit Windows use the x86 Version.
if you have a 64 Bit WIndows use the x64 Version.

  • In addition, after downloading, double click the downloaded file to unzip it and type in the password you received in the email. You can choose the location to unzip, such as the Desktop. After that, double click the file named Windows6.1-KB974674-x86 or Windows6.1-KB974674-x64 to install it.

  • Hi,

System -> System type   shows  "64-Bit Betriebsystem" (is a german version)  and "Genuine Intel(R) CPU U7300 @ 1.3 GHz  1,3 GHz".

I downloaded the x64 version and tried to install as indicated (double-click on Windows6.1-KB974674-x64.msu) but got an error message (in german) indicating that the update is not for the version of windows I'm running. The same happened with the IA64 version (not sure what IA64 means but I decided to give it a try).

Could the problem be caused by the difference in languages (german vs english) ?   is there a german version of this hotfix?

    THanks!  Jose

  • Hi Jose,

yeah, that update doesn't work a german Windows! The update is only installable on an ENGLISH Windows, becasue the MUI files for other languages are missing..

    In Deutsch:

Du hast das richtige Update, aber es lässt sich nicht installieren, da es nur für ein englisches Windows geeignet ist, da die Sprachdateien für andere Sprachen wie Deutsch fehlen..

  • FWIW:
KB974674 can't be installed on Windows 7 which is using another language than English. That said, KB974674 installs fine as soon as you switch the language to English via Control Panel.

Another note: KB974674 has been made available more broadly via Download Center since yesterday. That version is identical to the "hotfix" release. You may find a look into the Windows6.1-KB974674-x86-pkgProperties.txt (after unpacking the update) helpfull - or confusing where it reads: Language="ALL" which obviously isn't correct. Beeing curious by default, I had a look into the "update.mum" too which is an XML file and consits of

Note the "assemblyIdentify name" tags, where you can find the only hints to en-us , although the package itself is declared as language neutral. Seems to me the package isn't packaged properly
