Distribution group administration? RRS feed

  • Question

  • We'd like to set up a distribution group so sending email to that group sends to everybody in the group. I need to be able to add/edit who is on the list.  Our contractor said they can't do that because it would give me full access to all of Active Directory. So, to add people to the list, we need to ask them to do it.

    Does this sound right?

  • Hi,

For Exchange 2003, the “Owner” of the distribution group can manage the group.

But for Exchange 2007, you need to run this command:

Add-ADPermission –identity DistributionGroup –User owner –AccessRights WriteProperty –Properties “Member”

  • Without knowing the versions involved, it is impossible to say. It is possible to modify admin groups through the Outlook interface, and you will need the permissions on the group to modify the group membership.

You would only be able to add and remove users who already exist, so adding new external users would require additional permissions.

  • Thanks for the reply.  I’m using Outlook 2007.

I only need to add/remove people who are already in AD.

I’d be modifying the admin group through Outlook.  However, the contractor said if they do that, I’d be able to mess around with all of AD.  Therefore, we need to request them to make any changes to the list for us.

Is there any other information that would help provide advice?

  • That is incorrect. All they need to do is grant you permissions to change the group membership on the group that you need to modify. The permission you need is "Write Member".
