DNS Best Pratices RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

Does anyone know the best practices when it comes to DNS?

I have 15 locations each have a member server, lab, and staff computers about 40 computers roughly at each location.

at the headquarters, there is a file server, DC (Primary with DNS and Secondary with DNS) and about 60 computers.

All of my subnets and headquarters have their own DHCP.

All of my subnets come to headquarters for DNS info and it seems to be creating a bottleneck. Each location has their own Internet connection.

    1. Should I create a stand alone DNS to handle the DNS? or
    2. Create an AD integrated DNS at each subsite to alleviate them for coming to the headquarters.

What are the pros and cons of each option?

Should each subnet have DNS or should I cluster the DNS for an area or region?

Can I have the machines at the remote locations to take the local DNS or Cluster DNS as the Primary and then come to headquarters for Secondary.

Just need some advice to come up with a good direction to tackle my problem.

Trying to work on this over the holiday break....

    Any thoughts.
