  • There is an article on msdn http://windowssdk.msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms734601.aspx that describes the four supported ways to change windows resource protected (wrp) files or folders.

or look at the MSDN Vista SDK groups

  • How can I restore Config.NT if it is missing.  I am running Vista Premium.

I cannot install a 16 bit program becasue I get an error message that Config.NT is missing.

  • thanks for the reply, the actual prob i am having is that i need to alter the 'files = 40' to 'files = 100' at the end of config.nt.

I can enter config.nt through the command prompt and scroll to bottom and change the value. but when i try and save and exit it comes up with "edit was unable to create or access the file c:\windows\system32\config.nt"

    bit of a headache!

  • Go to DOS Prompt.  Right click and Open as "Administrator".  Change config.nt from read only with the attrib -r command.  Then you can open it with edit or notepad and make changes and save.  I had the same problem and needed to add more files for an old DOS program.  Works great now under Vista.

Right Click on Notepad shortcut and click on Run as Administrator this will open notepad
then edit config.nt which is in \windows\system32\ folder

Right Click on Command Prompt shortcut  and click on Run as Administrator
Command prompt window will open by default is \windows\system32 if not go to \windows\system32
    then type EDIT config.nt
