Project 2013 freezes in Team planner view RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

While right clicking and changing assignments in a Project file the Team planner freezes and Project must be restarted, this happens all the time and too frequent. The first thing that happens is that the large info box which is shown on right click together with the smaller one with percentage etc. dissapears. Then the changes can still be saved but Project can not be shut down in the normal way but must be closed by shutting down the process in the Task manager. Then it is just to open the file and continue as the Team planner works normal again until it freezes again. This has been so since the very beginning, but did not happen in the 2010 version. It only happens in the 2013 version which of course is the one we use as the reports in it are so great.

Any ideas to get rid of this annoying problem?

    Kind regards //Anders

  • Looks like no one has an immediate answer. So first try repairing your Project installation via the Control Panel and install SP1 for Project 2013 if you haven't already. If that doesn't help then maybe the Cumulative updates for June. That may fix your problem.

  • Thanks Rod, did repair the installation and also tried to install the hotfix, but were unsuccessful doing so. Just got a message that there was no software on the computer that the hotfix was valid for.

This problem seems only to happen in 2013, have been trying to recreate it in 2010 but are unable to do so, there it works without any problems at all. Did look at the memory usage in the task manager and when running in 2010 Project uses about 60 mB of memory, while 2013 uses about 140 mB, this does probably not have anything to do with it, but it is noticable something is differently made in the 2013 version.

2 other things is that and exported .pdf Before was about 500 kB large, but is now 1500-1700 kB, also exporting the .pdf file to a shared recourse on the network takes a lot of time, (first exporting it locally and then copying it using Filecopy in VBA still works just fine.)  In 2010 where the export was made directly.

Should perhaps try to report this as a problem to Microsoft along with the problem the the colors of the pie chart diagram changes. In the way we are using the software these are problems that we really would appreciate to get a solution for.

  • And you have SP1 installed?

I have SP1 and I think one CU, can't remember. So your build needs to be around 15.0.4569.1504.

Does this problem happen for all files? Just for you?

  • Sure Rod, the SP 1 is installed.

Are only working with one file, the planning for all our departments. I contains about 2000 tasks. The size of it is about 6000kB.

Are using the same file in 2010 without any problems at all. (Have that previous 2010 license installed on a Virtual server which we can access using remote desktop)

We work a lot with the team planner view when moving activites between resouces, it is a Daily work and we have to restart nearly every single time we work with it. But this is only in 2013, it works fine in 2010. However prefer not to run the 2010 version as the 2013 is better. (Well obviously not at present)

  • No more ideas I'm afraid. But, If you create a new project and use team planner on it in 2013 does that create the same problem? If not it's the file with a corruption of some sort. If yes then its Project 2013 and you probably need to raise a support item with Microsoft.

  • Rod, have not tried another file with this kind of size. But have saved it numerous times.

What is the best way to get in touch with Microsoft, and perhaps send the file to them?

    Thanks.

  • In case you have a file corruption, try saving to xml file type then opening and in teh wizard that appears insert into new file. If that doesn't work, phone your local Microsoft office

Rod has been through most/all things.  Are you able to share the file with me?

Yes he has. Sure, just need to change some customer information in it (Which does not affect the problem). How to send it?

  • Done Ben, it´s there now. Would you please delete it from the shared resource when you have downloaded it, thanks.

The problem occurs when working in Team Planner mode, sometimes after 10 minutes and sometimes after 3 minutes, moving around the activites between the team members. Mostly work with filter "09 Montering" and "02 Konstruktion" No matter which one is Active the same problem occurs so it has nothing to do with number of resources.

  • Anders, I've deleted the share and removed the link from the posting.  Also, which report did you have issues with re dates?

  • Thank you very much Ben,

It is the " Kommande montagestarter" report. Have just begun with it, it is only a table with rows for assembly tasks. (You need to expand all tasks in the Gantt view to see the values.)

  • Hi Anders,

I had a look at the file, and worked on it for 5-10 minutes, alas I didn't have any further time.  It didn't freeze, but that's hardly the point.  If you get a trial version of SnagIt (or even pay for it - it's a great tool), you can capture your screen with minimal overhead - after studying the relevant "freezes", you might notice something in common which will help further pin-point the issue.  Br,  Ben.

  • Hi Ben,

Thanks for looking into it. Perhaps it is something wrong with the installation or the PC that it runs on, have not thought of that before. Should try to copy the file to another computer and download a trial version to run it on and see if the problem is still there. Otherwise Snag it seems like a good idea. The time for project to stop working varies a lot, normally everything from 3- 10 minutes. There is one thing that normally seems to get project to stop working sooner and that is when switching between the Team planner and the Gantt view.

The work sequence is like this:

    -Open the project file
-Expand all tasks in the Gantt view
-Switch to Team planner, begin to drag & drop tasks between resources

-Mark a task in the Team planner view and switch to Gantt view to check how the project where the marked task is located underneath is following the plan.

-Switch back to Team planner, continue to switch tasks between resources

-Mark a task in the Team planner view and switch to Gantt view to check how the Project is following the plan, as above.

After a number of switches between the views project normally just stops working completely. Memory usage normally goes up to 140 MB, not much but still an increase towards the normal. The above sequence is the quickest way of getting Project to stop working. Would be interesting to see if you would get any problems repeating the sequence. If that would work for you for 10 minutes there must be something wrong with either the project installation or with the computer.

    Thanks and kind regards  //Anders

  • Hi again Ben,

Have now been able to test the file on another Project installation. At first it seemed to work perfectly well, did some Changes in the Team planner for 5-10 minutes and it worked well. Opened MS Word and worked some minutes there and switched back to Project, and continued for some minutes in Team planner doing Changes and it still worked well. Left the computer for 15 minutes, came back, wrote some lines in and opened a new Word document and switched to Project. Begun to make Changes and after just a few Changes Project just stop working.

It really seems like the problem is within the software and not with the PC or with the installation. Guess the best thing to do now would be to download snag it and try to record the screen.

If this would be a usual problem among Project users the forum would have more questions about this problem, but have not seen any other so far.

    Kind regards //Anders

  • Ismet,

Thank you very much for your kind attention to this matter, are dowloading the hotfix now, and really hope that it will solve the problem. We spend a lot of time using the Team planner, and it is a great tool.

  • Ismet,

Have now downloaded the hotfix, but when trying to install it a message appears that " there are no Products installed that will be affected by this hotfix"

(Are using and have downloaded the 32 bit version.)

That was a pity, was really hoping that it would work. Do you know who to Contact about the issue for why the message appears?

    Kind regards //Anders

    Tuesday, December 16, 2014 7:13 AM
  • Ismet, the same message appeared for the last hotfix that was released as well. Are running the 32 bit version of Project on a 64 bit windows 8.1 PC.

    Kind regards //Anders

    Tuesday, December 16, 2014 7:18 AM
  • I've installed the hotfix (32-bit) without problem and the version number now shows 15.0.4675.1000. Have you also tried updates for the other office products ?
    Tuesday, December 16, 2014 8:48 AM
  • Just updated and the version number now shows 15.0.4675.1002, still after that update the same message appears when trying to run the hotfix.

Could the hotfix already have been applied, but should it not then state that it has been installed already?

    Kind regards //Anders

  • >> Could the hotfix already have been applied, but should it not then state that it has been installed already?

That's correct. It is supposed to display "already installed" message. I would also verify the installed updates through the Control Panel.

You now see 4675, then does it solve the issue with the Team Planner ?

    Tuesday, December 16, 2014 9:04 AM
  • According to what was included in the version number 15.0.4675.1002, it was only other office Products which was updated.

Have tried to Contact MS Support, but the contact page does not respond.

    Kind regards//Anders

  • Ismet,

Fantastic, it now seems to work. Have made several houndred changes in the Team planner, been switching to different views, etc. and Project is still up running.

Thank you very very much for your kind assistance !!! you have been very helpful. This has been a disturbing thing since we begun to use version 2013.
