Backups Failing on a HyperV Host

    Question

  • Hi I have a strange issue here that I have never seen before, Whenever I try to do a backup or export any virtual machine on a particular server the virtual machine management service crashes out and the backup fails.

    the event logs are below

The backup operation that started at '‎2017‎-‎02‎-‎22T14:15:45.097000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '0x8100010C'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

A VSS writer has rejected an event with error 0x800423f4, The writer experienced a non-transient error. If the backup process is retried,

the error is likely to reoccur.

. Changes that the writer made to the writer components while handling the event will not be available to the requester. Check the event log for related events from the application hosting the VSS writer.

  • Hi Raymond,

Are you using Windows Server Backup?

If exporting also failed, maybe there is something wrong with the Hyper-V components.

I suggest you try to reinstall Hyper-V role. You could copy the VHD files of the VMs and build new VMs after reinstallation.

    Best Regards,

    Leo
