Client WORKGROUP machines installed but not assigned to Site RRS feed

  • Question

  • Greetings. Working with SCCM 2012 and the client is Windows 10 Pro. I cannot get a Workgroup client to show up as Client=Yes and assigned to the site. Here is what I have done:
Make sure there are DNS and WINS entries for the Primary Site/MP. Made sure the Admin$ share is accessible on the client. Ran "CCMSETUP SMSSITECODE=CPK /mp:507-SRV02 /service" on the client after manually copying the client files to the client. Ran as Administrator. Make sure a boundary is configured on the Site for the client (10.0.0.0). The client IP address is 10.0.0.3.
The client is in Workgroup. The Primary Site/Mp is in a domain. There are two clients, which are in the domain, that show up as CLIENT=YES and are assigned to the site. The other (domain member) clients have hardware and software inventory posted.

Could this be an issue where the client can't talk to the MP? If so how do you fix? I will post some lines from the client log below. Please respond here or you can email me. Send me a message here if you want to email me.

    Many thanks.

  • Still does not work. .
Have you approved this client in the CM console?

Don [doesn't work for MSFT, and they're probably glad about that ;]

  • /mp does *not* set the MP to be used by the client: http://blog.configmgrftw.com/ccmsetup-mp-and-smsmp/

Also, not sure if this has changed or not, but on the ccmsetup command-line, switches (those prefixed with a forward slash) must come before properties (those in all caps and not prefixed with a forward-slash).

Finally, do you have a boundary for 10.0.0.3 and is it included in an boundary group that has a DP associated with it?

  • Ok, good to know about the switches. I'll try SMSMP instead of /mp:

Yeah I have 10.0.0.0 defined as a Site boundary but not for a DP group. I don't even think I have software distribution turned on yet. Curious that the two domain-members became assigned but the Workgroup machine did not.

I'll try a couple of your suggestions and see what happens. Thanks for your reply.

  • Still does not work. It seems like the client cannot get information (boundaries? site assignment?) from the MP. Any ideas? I used to get Workgroup clients installed with SCCM 2007 without issue. Also, do you remember the URL to interrogate an MP? I guess I could try that from the client. Thanks again.

I had it set to "Automatically approve computers in trusted domains". So I joined the Workgroup Windows 10 machine to the domain and the client installed. I guess that was he answer. I'm going to try "Automatically approve all computers" and install a Workgroup machine and see what happens. Thanks for your answer. This seems to be the key.

  • Did it work?

  • Yes. Setting "Automatically approve all computers" allowed the Workgroup computers (2 now) to install and be assigned to the site. FYI, there was no option to "Approve" because the machines had not shown up in any Collections, since they were not in Active Directory. Still, I should have known better. Thanks for your help.
