  • What does the error code "0xC0000005" mean?

  • Have you seen any memory issues using this PC with another OS? 

    And does the error occur frequently - perhaps when a particular application is running?

    Also, try running the Windows Memory Diagnostics boot-time option.  That way we should be able to rule bad memory in/out before trying to work out if there is a software problem.

  • Hi Quentin,

    It's an "access violation error" but for a more full description:

    "The error 0xC0000005 is generated by an illegal "memory access violation". This can be caused by anything from faulty RAM, an incorrect/corrupt device driver, poorly written/updated software and malware."

  • First, check your memory thoroughly.  You can do this by booting the install disk and select "Repair my Computer".

    Then, try booting in safe mode.

    Use msconfig to disable all non-Microsoft drivers and startup software.
