  • Question

  • Hi,

    1.  What are the minimum number of servers required to implement an SCVMM Solution (All Roles)?

    2.  What server roles can be collocated on the same server?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi,

    1.  What are the minimum number of servers required to implement an SCOM Solution (All Roles)?

Answer: You can implement everything on one (1) single standalone server.

    2.  What server roles can be collocated on the same server?

    Answer: See answer above.

Normally you would at least have the database on a separate server, the rest can be on one (1) standalone server, depending on your organization's size and limitations.

    Best regards,

  • Thanks for the reply.

So, basically only one-1 Server can accommodate all the roles including Library Server?  Please, correct my understanding.

Just adding one more question:  And to have a HA of SCVMM with minimum amount of servers, we would need a remote SQL/SQL Cluster as well as two-2 SCVMM Servers holding all the roles each including Library Server OR should we cluster File Server and make it Library while keeping Management Servers on two-2 other machines?  Please, correct my understanding.

    Thanks in advance.

    Answer: Yes.

    Answer:

    • Deploy the VMM management server in a failover cluster (at least two servers).
    • Make library server file shares highly available (for example in a cluster).
    • Deploy the SQL Server VMM database as highly available. (at least two servers)

  • Thanks for the reply.

Can we further save two-2 servers by having Library Servers also installed on the same servers as Management Servers? Is this supported? i.e. as File Server Cluster

  • Yes you can use the management servers as library servers.

  • Great.  Just to be clear, we would still have HA of both MS as well as Library Server.

  • Yes, as long as they are clustered you will have high availability.

  • Thanks for the reply.

    Final clarification.

So, Management Servers would be setup as VMM Cluster and same servers would be setup as File Server Cluster to serve as Library Servers and it would not cause an issue with clustering or anything service?

    Thanks in advance.

  • No it will not cause any issues, you can simply install the File Server cluster role on all management servers to be able to get HA library servers.
