Word 2011 for Mac interface flashes like crazy when trying to save a document

The interface in Word for Mac 2011 flashes like a strobe light and is barely responsive when I'm trying to save a document. Is there a solution to this problem? I'm sorry I paid $219 for Office for my new Air. Thanks for any help or suggestions you can give me.
