Switch to Secondary DPM 2010 Server RRS feed

  • Question

  • I want to convert a secondary DPM server a primary as the old primary DPM server does not exist anymore.

I have transferred all the agents & backup jobs to the secondary server successfully. However, I still got issues such as backup jobs with "(Protection-Switched)" appended to the name.

I've been looking for a working solution to make a secondary DPM server primary without much success.

    Please help!

  • Hi,

There are no provisions for making a secondary DPM server into a true primary DPM server. Once a secondary DPM server always a Secondary DPM server.  If the original primary DPM Server is never coming back, then you have three choices.

    1) Live with the switched protection.

    2) Rebuild the Secondary from scratch using the original primary DPM Server name, and restore the primary DPM SQL database (from backup) so you don't need to remake the protection groups. This means wiping the storage pool disk.

    3) Rebuild the Secondary from scratch and start over completly.  This means wiping the storage pool disk and making new PG's.

Only Option 1 will retain current backups on the secondary, options 2, and 3 will mean starting with a cleaned storage pool and loosing all recovery points on disk.

  • Is it not possible to edit the DPM database and get rid of all the primary server records/connections?

  • HI,

It is not a supported senario, however, if you open a support ticket with us we do have scripts that can clean up the DB to remove references to the primary DPM server.  Since it is currently "by design" - you will be charged for the support incident.
