VSS vs VSS writer RRS feed

  • Question

  • Are there any differences between using a regular VSS snapshot vs using Exchange VSS Writers for backing up the exchange data store?

    Thanks for any insight.

  • VSS has three parts; the requestor, the provider, and the writer.  The requestor is what coordinates activities between the writer and the provider, you can think of it as the backup program.  The provider is the piece that actually takes the snapshot.  It can be a software provider like the shadow copy service, or it can be a hardware provider from your storage vendor.  The writer is the piece that communicates with the filesystem or application to quiesce the write IO during the snapshot.  Although it would be possible to take a snapshot simply by calling the vss provider, that snapshot would be neither filesystem nor application consistent.

  • As per knowledge, VSS snapshot is for file level backup and does not use in exchange. But when you take VSS backup of exchange sevrer then it use VSS writers which come with windows for backup.
