Windows 7 keyboard focus lost in explorer RRS feed

  • Question

  • When I alt tab to an explorer window sometimes my keyboard focus is lost and I can't find it in the window. I thought I should report it because it has been bugging me since Win7 Beta. It doesn't happen very often, less than once a month I believe. If you were to ask me what I thought was causing it in explorer, I would say I believe it's the new explorer column headers which accept kb focus. Just a hunch.

By the focus being lost I mean it doesn't seem to be in the app window. An example is sometimes when I alt tab to Explorer, once I'm in the window no amount of tabbing will bring me a cursor or highlight any field, I can't alt+d or f4 to get to the address bar (I assume it would accept an alt+f4 though, I haven't tried. I can alt tab, hit ctrl+esc, everything is fine, the only oddity is my kb focus isn't on the explorer window. Next time it happens in explorer I'll do an alt+printscreen to see if some hidden window has my kb focus.

In Photoshop it happens when I have the save window open and go to another app and then return. The kb focus is on Photoshop's main window (inaccessible) and not the save window in the forefront. I don't think these issues are related but who knows.

As I mentioned it's been happening since the beta and now I use Win 7 pro x64.

  • I still experience this occasionally. I don't know what is causing it.

I did an alt+print screen while I was an explorer window when I was experiencing the kb bug focus prob on the window and below is the screen shot.

(Ignore the Z: volume label, I haven't renamed it since I was using Win7 rc. I'm using Win7 pro x64)

I was wrong in my previous post  that I am unable to tab. That issue was probably Photoshop only.

When the focus issue happened this time, I had alt tabbed to an explorer window from another app on my system (it's not related to any specific app I alt tab from because this app is a new addition) and I didn't have any kb focus. Ctrl+w wouldn't close the window, alt+d wouldn't go to the address bar, the arrow keys didn't move. Pressing tab worked and brought me to the first path group in the address bar. My explorer windows are always set to Details view  so I've only experienced it in with Details.

I don't know how to reproduce it and it happens so infrequently that I can't watch to see steps may have caused it.

I believe it's a bug in explorer. The new explorer windows have the addition of the table column headers that take kb focus and the new address bar groupings that can take the kb focus and the column headers are backwards in the tab sort order so I think its something in there.

Since I seem to be the only one who is reporting this prob then it makes me believe it's on my system or maybe I'm just one of the few people left who uses Windows by kb mainly.

  • It just happened again, I'm wondering if it's related to pressing alt+up because as soon as I alt tabbed to another explorer window, I press alt+up to go up a directory and nothing happened. I checked the focus and it was missing again so this time I press shift+tab to go backwards and it brought me to the table column headers. What exists in the sort order between the address bar groupings and the table column headers? Is it something that isn't always shown?
