SharePoint Backups

Question

Hello all,
I am looking for some information on SharePoint backup. I still don't know a lot of the beast called SharePoint except for a very particular set of permissions administration and upkeep. I wanted to know exactly what is getting backed up when I perform a SharePoint Farm backup in CA versus a full SQL backup on the SQL Server. Are these 2 methods getting different information, or can I just use one method or the other? I can't seem to find the answer to this question on other sites so I figured that I would start here. This is not just to have a good set of backups, but mostly in preparation to upgrade to 2016, single server farm.
Also, what are some of the products that you use to backup the SharePoint farm and its data? Is it SQL tools, Central Admin backup using a script in a scheduled task, or are you using a 3rd party software solution?
Thanks in advance!!

A full farm backup also backs up the databases on SQL. What I would suggest:
Continue using SQL to backup all databases sans Config, Admin, USPA Sync, and Usage. These databases either cannot be restored or have no value to be restored.
From the SharePoint side, perform a configuration only backup.

So, really a 3rd party backup software that works with SharePoint is kind of a waste of money since I have such a small implementation? Unless I want granular file\item level restores??

I would say it probably is. I've never had the need to use one, even in multi-TB installations. You can even use unattached CDB restore option to get more granular than the database level.
