windows 2008 dcpromo failure in 2003 domain

Question

Hi
have run into an issue today and have hit a brick wall so to speak, upgraded a windows 2003 domain schema last week from the windown 2008 dvd, ran the following
adprep /forestprep
adprep /domainprep /gpprep
adprep /rodcprep
all ran fine without any issues whatsoever, if i do a dsquery from either of my 2 dc's shows as version 44 (windows 2008 domain)
the issue I am having is when i attemot to dcpromo my first 2008 member server to a dc tells me the domain needs to be prepared beforehand, if i attempt to run the above again tells me it is already done, as it stands cannot add 2008 dc's (for the record all is 32bit), each of the logs for the 3 commands are clean as all ran fine without error, have the dcpromo, any help greatly appreciated

Hi
the domain and forest were prepared without issue, after troubleshooting this and removing 2 domain controllers whihc someone did not dcpromo correctly still could not ptomote to dc, in the end it turned out to be a missing PTR record for the member server was trying to promote, once this was remedied worked straight away
cheers

Hi,
From your description, I suspect you miss preparing your domain. Please also run "adprep /domainprep" to prepare your domain.
In addition, adprep /rodcprep is just to prepare existing DCs for RODC installation. Howerver, please understand before we deploy RODC, there is at least one Windows server 2008 DC existing in our network. For your circumstance, you should run "adprep /domainprep" to prepare your current domain for the first one windows server 2008 DC installation instead of running "adprep /rodcpre" to prepare RODC installation.
For your reference, ADPrep maintains data and log files of its operations. Each time ADPrep runs, a log file “ADPREP.LOG” is created in the applicable directory following the
%SystemRoot%\system32\debug\adprep\logs\YYYYMMDDHHMMSS.
You can open this log file to find more information about Adprep.
Hope this helps.

I got the same problem here. I have only 1 Windows 2003 R2 Server as a DC. The Windows 2008 already a member of the forest.
The Windows 2003 R2 Server already run the command.
adprep /forestprep
adprep /domainprep /gpprep
adprep /rodcprep
With the log, All process are successfully without errors.
But when I run dcpromo in Windows Server 2008, it keeps promot that the domain needed to run adprep /forestprep command.
Anyone have this solution?- Proposed as answer by JohnK949 Saturday, May 9, 2009 6:06 AM

This is the tested answer.
Condition: Source Active directory is Windows 2003.
New Server is Windows 2008 (in this test 64 bit edition)
Take the ADPREP off CD 2 for Windows 2003 will look like it runs succesfully and give the idea that all is well but it is NOT.
Even if you have run ADPREP with the 2003 CD you are still ok.
The solution is to run ADPREP from the Windows 2008's CD (Support ADPREP folder) Note the Adprep on has two versions one is version adprep32.exe, for a 32 Bit Windows 2003 Domain Controller run the adprep32.exe
Copy the ADPREP folder to the older Windows 2003 domain controller and run it. Notice this time it takes quite a bit longer to run.
Once it does run Windows 2008 dcpromo can run and will advance past the adprep /forestprep message.- Proposed as answer by JohnK949 Saturday, May 9, 2009 5:52 PM

Hello JohnK949! Hey, I was following the instructions, but in my "Windows Server 2008 x86 x64 DVD (Eng)", in the Support\ADPREP folder, there is only one file named "adprep.exe"... no 32bit version. So... ... ... I´m not able to run "adprep /domainprep" with the version I have in my DVD? If so, how can I get the 32bit version? ... I dónt have any more Win2008 cd's or DVD's. :o(

We have a Primary Domain Controller with 2003 Server, and Now i tried to make an Additional DC with 2008 Server. I have put all the Preparations and IP Configurations . those all OK.!!. But when i try to dcpromo, and when i choose to Existing forest, i gave our Domain name and the credentials to install is OK.!!, When i put Next. It says Active directory Domain Controller for the Domain xxxxxx.com could not be contacted, and it says to check the DNS Name typed correctly or not.. But i have gone through all the DNS Tests and all.. it all worked fine. but still i am not able to go further from this step.. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You.!!!!

JohnK949 - Thank you for pointing out the two versions! I was not aware of this and was clearly, in my case, using incorrect version. After running the right version of ADPrep /forestprep on my Schema Master and ADPrep /domainprep on the Infrastructure Master; all worked like a dream and my newly bouncing baby Windows 2008 R2 is happily being promoted.... Cheers!

In most every case I have seen this it is because the 2003 DC is a 32bit machine you MUST have a 2003 64bit DC with at least infrastructure and schema master roles on it and run the 64bit ADPrep on the 64bit server BEFORE you will be able to promote the 2008 64bit member server to a DC in the domain.
