Problem with instalation of DPM 2010 ID:820 RRS feed

  • Question

  • When I try to install DPM 2010 on WS2008R2, I receive this error:

Verify that the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) service is running. If the WMI service is not running, in Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, and then click Services. Right-click Windows Management Instrumentation, and then click Start.
To troubleshoot this issue further, refer to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=167898

    ID: 820

When I visit link that appear in error and check error ID:820 I received this:

Error 820. Setup cannot query the system configuration while performing the prerequisite check on the Windows Server 2008 operating system.

This issue occurs if the WMI repository is inconsistent.

To resolve this issue, verify that the WMI repository is consistent. At the command prompt, run Winmgmt /verifyrepository. If it is inconsistent, resolve the issue and try the installation again.

    Winmgmt /verifyrepository

gave me that repository is consistent.

  • Hi,

This may be a perms issue.   See if you can get the SQL Server (MSDPM2010) service to start using the .\MICROSOFT$DPM$Acct - you can try adding that account to local administrators group and see if that works.  If that works, you may have a GPO that is modifying default permissions, so try putting the machine acount in it's own OU and block inheritance.

  • Hi

Perform the following and see if you get any errors back for any of these queries.

    Test basic WMI queries.

    1) From start, run, type: Wbemtest
    2) Click connect and connect to the default namespace: root\cimv2
    3) Click on the Query button and enter into the box: Select * from Win32_SystemSetting
    4) Press the Apply button, and it should enumerate the system settings and display a list of items.
    5) If that works, query: Select * from Win32_SystemServices

Next close wbemtest and run these command to test SQL Specific WMI.

    1) Open wbemtest from start, run.
    2) Click on connect and give the namespace as:  root\Microsoft\SqlServer\ComputerManagement10
    3) Click on Query and execute the following WQL query: SELECT * FROM ServerSettings
    4) If there is any error in the above steps, you have a problem with SQL WMI.

From an administrative command prompt run the following command:

    C:\>mofcomp "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Shared\sqlmgmproviderxpsp2up.mof"

  • Try this..It works for me..I found it in one of the forum..

Copy this into notepad and save it as fixwmi.cmd and then from a command line run c:\fixwmi.cmd.

It takes several minutes to complete and at points it appears that it is not running but it is.  After it is complete, you see the :END statement start the SQL server installation again and you should be fixed.
