Lync/S4B hybrid - licensing RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello, I'm going to configure hybrid mode for a small S4B on-prem deployment (single frontend, single edge) with about 100 users.

I have only a simple question about licensing: if I move to the cloud only 50 users and I keep on-prem the others (but all of the S4B users are synced with AAD Connect), how many Office 365 license do I need? 50?

If a user remains on the on-prem pool he doesn't need a Office 365 license, right?

    Thanks in advance, regards.

  • Hi Federico

In hybrid mode, few users will be homed on Prem and few will be homed online.

Each user will require its own license. So if you move 50 you will need to 50 O365 licenses.

If a user is On prem SFB homed user, then he wil not require an Office 365 license

An O365 license is only applicable when you move the on prem SFB user to O365 or directly provision a user on O365.

Also, are you just planning to move 50 users to O365. SFB will be one part to look at. They will have mailboxes in O365 as well

Irrespective of how many users you will move to O365 (W.r.t Exchange mailbox or SFB), thy will eventually require license. So, the number of users moved to O365 = The number of licenses required

    Hope that answers your query

  • Hi Federico,

Yes, agree with Akabe, you need 50 Office 365 license for the users in SFB online

As a supplement, the users which homed in SFB on premise don’t need SFB online license. For SFB on premise, it requires license for SFB FE server, Edge server doesn’t require a license.

You could contact Microsoft Customer Service for the license issue:

Hope this information is helpful to you.
