Remote desktop (Terminal Services) usage and licensing RRS feed

  • Question

  • I want to install a Windows 2008 server and wish to enable remote desktop to support 3-4 concurrent connections.  Is this handled via Terminal Services or some other method?  Is the capability included with Windows Server Standard edition or do I need to purchase something else?  Do CAL's have to be purchased?

    Thanks.

  • Hi,

You need to purchase or own Windows Server CALs and RDS CALs for each user/device that will be connecting to your Server 2008 via remote desktop.  RDS licensing is not concurrent, it is Per User or Per Device that will be connecting.  Windows Server 2008 does not include RDS CALs, however, it may include some Windows Server CALs depending on which SKU you own.

If this is Server 2008 then you will need to add the Terminal Services Role along with the Terminal Server and TS Licensing Role Services using Server Manager.  After these are installed you need to activate your TS Licensing server, install your RDS CALs, and configure your server's TS licensing mode in TS Configuration.

If this is Server 2008 R2 then you will need to add the Remote Desktop Services Role along with the Remote Desktop Session Host and RD Licensing Role Services using Server Manager.  After these are installed you need to activate your RD Licensing server, install your RDS CALs, configure your server's RD licensing mode in RD Session Host Configuration, and specify your RD Licensing server (itself) in RD Session Host Configuration.
