No users listed in "Profiles stored on this computer" under User Profiles RRS feed

  • Question

My PC with Vista Ultimate was working just fine when one day it won't load (freezes on Starting Window Vista screen). Fixed the problem by running chkdsk from a bootloader. But on the first time I logged in thereafter, Vista created a temporary profile (so I lost my user settings including wallpaper, application settings, etc). Luckily my profile folder is still intact in C:\Users\<Profile Name>.

    On to the weird things:

    1. Looking at the registry, there are profiles (e.g., S-1-5-21-1677952148-1243564268-1152631611-1045) in HKLM/Software/Microsoft/WinNT/CurrentVersion/ProfileList that says

    "<Profile ID> cannot be opened.
An error is preventing this key from being opened.
Details: The system cannot find the file specified."

    whenever I click on them.

    2. When I open User Profiles by right-clicking Computer > Properties > Advance > User Profiles Settings, there's no user profile listed in the "Profiles stored in this computer" grid.

    Please help.

    Thanks in advance.
