System State backup always inconsistend with error 0x80070020 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello everybody,

at a customer's site, there is a DPM 2010 running on Windows Server 2008 R2. Backups of several physical and virtual machines just work fine. However, System State backups of one physical domain Controller are always inconsistent. We tried consistency checks, reboots of both the DC and the DPM machine, removing the system state from the protection group including removing disk recovery points, but nothing helped so far.

On the DPM server (not the DC to be backed up!) we find the following excerpt in MSDPMCurr.errlog:

ProcessId	ThreadId	Date	Time	ComponentCode	FileName(FileLine)	This	TaskId	Level	TraceMessage

All systems are up to current patches. There is no anti-virus software installed on the DPM nor on the DC.

    Is there any tip?

  • Hi,

ErrorCode: 0x80070020 (-2147024864): The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

I have seen HP Insight Storage Agent cause this error. See if you have HP Insight Storage Agent running and if so stop and disable this service and see if backup succeeds.  The other troubleshooting step would be to download sysinternals process monitor and see if you can figure out what process is causing the error.

  • Hello everybody,

we have indeed found that a mMonitoring tool causes the problem. When we stop its service, Backup runs fine. We have gathered a ProcessMonitor log and found a sharing violation for \Device\Harddisk0\HD0. We are in contact with the developers of the monitoring service to work on a solution. Thanks everybody.
