Running admin templates for multiple versions of Internet Explorer across the Enterprise RRS feed

  • Question

  • Currently we are running IE9 in our Enterprise and utilizing admin templates through Group Policy. We are getting ready to push out IE 11. My understanding is once you install IE 11 the adm templates will be updated through the inetres file. The question is how do I run multiple versions of IE with their respective admin templates until we are done piloting 11 and phase out 9 completely.

  • There should be no need to worry about using "matching" templates.

IE ADMX/ADML templates are not version-specific, you can use IE11 templates to manage older version of IE.
(Office admin templates are different, those are version-specific)

We use IE11 admin templates to manage all of our various IE policies for all of our various versions of IE, without issues.

Note that the admin template is not needed for a GP to be processed/applied to a targeted machine - the template is only needed when you are authoring/modifying GP settings in GPMC or GPedit, and also when using gpresult or RSoP to view the status/settings.
