Error Message: WindowsUpdate_8004FF81 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am running Windows 7 Pro.  When I try to install Microsoft Security Essentials, I get this error message.  I've tried shutting Defender off and the same this happens.  There is no other antivirus on the computer.  Defender seems to function as an antivirus but is not recognized as such by Windows Update.  It keeps telling me I have no antivirus.

  • Hi there,

Below is a fix that has seemed to work for others having the similar issue, see if it could help you:

    1) Press Windows key + R and type regedit

    2) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Image File Execution Options

    3) Look at each subkey, they have the names of exe files. If the key contains the value Debugger, it means the particular .exe file is being redirected

    4) Delete the entire key for the .exe

You may expect to find msconfig.exe (or just msconfig) in the list, in addition to .exe files associated with Security Essentials."

    Hope this helps!

    Best regards,

  • Thanks, Leon.  I tried your solution but there was no Debugger value among the subkeys.  Hopefully, someone will come up with a solution.

  • Okay, if you can find the registry key below, try removing it:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT > Installer > UpgradeCodes >26D13F39948E1D546B0106B5539504D9
