Few simple questions about Lync and Enterprise Voice

Question
-
We already have Cisco CallManager and a couple thousand Cisco IP Phones, but I want to be able to dial numbers from Lync as well.
What's the best way to go about this and integrate the two products?
Can Lync share a phone number (or extension) with a desk phone or would each Lync client need its own number as well?
If each Lync client needs its own number, how do I go about assigning them their own numbers?
Would it be possible to dial a number from Lync, but make it look like it was rang from the desk phone?
I'm not very familiar with voice, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
You can configure RCC on lync for the above requirement. Please refer the article for more information:

Hi,Jumper
You can look at these links posted by Mark A King and James Botham for more information about Lync and Cisco call manager integration.
Hope these useful!

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for your replies, but after reading all these documents in addition to many others, I'm still not too clear on what approach to take. My simplest requirement is to be able to dial a phone number from Lync, but have the call to actually be made from the Cisco desk phone. Basically, I want to click a number from Lync, then pick up the Cisco phone and talk to the person. Is that possible and what's the best and easiest approach? I would much rather avoid the Cisco Lync Plugin. I read a Cisco document about Remote Call Control, but that seems to require the Cisco presence server as well as a plugin. If I go with Enterprise Voice will that allow me to dial the number from Lync, but talk to the person from my desk phone?
Thank you

Hi,
The following:
" My simplest requirement is to be able to dial a phone number from Lync, but have the call to actually be made from the Cisco desk phone"
can only be accomplished through RCC (And a CUPS server) or through the CUCILYNC plugin.

So if I setup RCC and CUPS together, would I still need a plugin or can all calls be controlled through Lync?Thursday, July 14, 2011 5:37 PM

Hi,
I have just implemented RCC on our Presence server using this doc: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cups/8_5/english/integration_notes/IntegrationNote_CUP852_MicrosoftLyncServer2010_RCC.pdf
I did not have to install any plugins to make it work.

Thanks for ur reply, but I gotta tell you guys, this is becoming a real pain. Because, it looks like every approach has some major limitations -
The Cisco/Lync Plugin - You basically have to maintain two separate clients, integration into Lync and other MS products is poor, and you need VPN access for everything.
Remote Call Control - This would have been a descent solution, but when u enable RCC, it entirely disables Video calls (that's just stupid), and of course there's no Soft Phone. And you need to buy a Cisco Presence Server.
Enterprise Voice - You have to make all calls from your computer, with no way of controlling your Cisco desk phone. As far as I can tell, there isn't even a way of sending presence signals from the desk phone to Lync with this approach. Or is there?
I'm really baffled now and don't know what approach to take. If the Cisco Plugin can provide desk phone control, soft phone, and presence updates, why can't Lync? Has anyone been able to integrate Lync with existing Cisco equipment in a fairly large production environment with satisfactory user experience? What approach did you take?

What you say is true. There are certain limitations with all integrations. These are, after all, competing systems/services, so it shouldn't come as a complete surprise.
I have implemented all of the different scenarios, with success. But success is not measured of how much stuff you make work, but rather how you implement what, based on the customers need.
Sit down with a group of users, representing all aspects of users, and try to figure out which functions are the critical ones. Then decide which path to take (or use a combination if you have to).
I think that is the best advise I can give you.
