FIM Sync Service keeps disabling RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • I've installed FIM 2010 R2 and I've noticed the Syncronzation Service keeps stopping and the startup type is getting set to disabled. It is happening on a regular basis. I am running FIM 2010 R2 on W2K8 R2 and Sharepoint 2010.

    Anyone have any ideas?

  • You might check the System event log, where changes to service startup type ought to be recorded.

I really can't think of anything within the FIM Sync Service or associated software that would cause this.  Has the service been failing otherwise?

  • I have noticed this in another SharePoint 2010 environment where FIM 2010 (non R2) is installed. This seems to be to do with the fact SharePoint 2010 uses FIM for DirSync, and will disable the service according to its own settings. You may want to check what jobs SharePoint is running, as well as the status of its services.

  • Any update on this? I am having the same issue. I'm new to FIM. We are using FIM 2010 R2, Server 2008 R2, SQL 2008 R2, and Sharepoint 2010. The service seems to disable itself after 30 minutes or so. I look at the Sharepoint jobs and they all say succeeded, but I'm not sure what I should be looking for in relation to FIM.

On a side note, if I google this, I get a lot of threads about the Sharepoint User Profile Sync service. We do not plan on using Sharepoint for anything other than the FIM portals and sync service. Is it required that I set up the UPS? I didn't see anything in the FIM 2010 installation guides that say I need to set it up. However, I get this error message every now and then:

The server encountered an unexpected error and stopped.

  • What specific version of Sharepoint 2010 are you running?
    Monday, August 6, 2012 3:28 PM
  • We are running Sharepoint 2010 with SP1. Version #: 14.0.6029.1000
    Monday, August 6, 2012 3:38 PM
  • Another thing, every time the FIM Sync service is started, I get 11 errors saying something like:

HRESULT: '0x80070057' Source: 'd:\bt\9394412\private\source\miis\shared\maxml\cdext.cpp(416)'  Thread ID: '0x72c' Additional Info: ''

That's just one, but there are several others like it.

EDIT: These errors are located in the event log under Applications & Services logs -> Forefront Identity Manger Synchronization -> Operational

  • Is it Sharepoint 2010, or Sharepoint 2010 Foundation?

I don't believe the FIM 2010 R2 Synchronization Service is supported on a Sharepoint farm deployment.

  • It appears a SharePoint timer job is responsible - "Health Analysis Job (Hourly, Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Timer, All Servers)"

  • Hi Peter, would you mind to share how do you find the timer job is responsible?

I want to confirm this in my SharePoint farm too

  • This seems to be the case for me as well. I don't need the share point timer service so i just disabled it.

    get-service fim* | Set-Service -StartupType Automatic
    get-service fim* | Start-Service
    get-service sptimer* | Set-Service -StartupType Disabled
    get-service sptimer* | Stop-service

  • Disabling share point timer is a requirement for FIM\MIM.
