Explorer "Preview Details" RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have changed the 'Preview Details' key for several file types located in:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SystemFileAssociations\

I have restarted my PC after making the changes, but they have no effect.

    See pictures:
mp3 File  (Only: Artitst, Duration and Bitrate should be showing in the details pane)

  • I don't know anything about these values, but what you're showing in your image is the Details pane, not the Preview pane.  Could it be that you really want to change one of the other values (e.g., FullDetails) to affect what's shown in the Details pane?

Do more Details show up if you widen the Explorer window or make the Details pane higher?

What does the * do in the definition you've set?

Where did you find documentation instructing how to change that registry value?  Is changing these values something that's supported by Microsoft?

  • You are correct, I am showing the Details Pane, which is controlled by the value I mention in the OP. Try it and you'll see.

More details do show when I increase the size of the Details Pane.

Changing these values works for other files types, but not for many audio types.

So it's not a documented interface Microsoft supports you accessing, but just something someone uncovered.  I'm not against trying to tweak Windows in this way, but if it's not documented to work you're probably kind of on your own.

It does seem quite odd that it would work for only some file types, but I suppose it's not impossible that someone hard-coded the display details in one part of the code while using the property sheet values in another place.

Did you try it without the * characters in there?

Yes, "Preview pane" was the former name for the "Details pane", in pre-RTM Windows Vista. They didn't change the property names so it is a bit confusing: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/benkaras/archive/2006/11/08/trivia-why-is-system-proplist-previewdetails-named-previewdetails.aspx

Does the problem happen with every MP3 file on your computer? If so, paste here the file association report for the .mp3 extension, using this tool: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/utils/fileextinfo.zip
