Lync 2010 to SfB online and then Hybrid with SfB on-premise RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello all,

I have an Lync 2010 environment  and I need to migrate all users to Skype for Business online in the next few months (20 K users), next will be to decomission the Lync 2010 . Only after that we want to create an hybrid building up a Skype for business on premise to deliver full voice capabilities to our users.  Speaking with some Microsoft expert , they state that once the coexistence and then migration from Lync 2010 to SfB online is done , there is no possibility to create the hybrid with Sfb on premise anymore ... do you have the same information ? why should not be possible ?

Thanks a lot for your help

  • Hi Gianluca,

In the end it would be possible to move back from SFBO to onprem but there are limitations that can cause lot of trouble when migrating back. best path to follow is add sfb server 2015 in your topology and migrate everybody to the new pool. Then configure hybrid and move the users online.

  • Hi Gianluca,

What you can do is migrate users to the new SFB onprem deployment and then create hybrid with skype for business online. The users must homed on prem first then move to skype for business online.

See here more info about the hybrid scenario: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj205403.aspx

If you want only PSTN connectivity maybe a Cloud Connector Edition is a better option?

  • Hi Erdem,

Thanks a lot for your answer. Unfortunately i can't have the onpremise before moving users to sfb online , this is a requirement from the customer. and PSTN with CCE is not enough to provide full voice capabilities as per customer requirement. I know that is a little bit a challenge but i really want to know why i can't create an hybrid after moving all users online and after Lync 2010 will be decommissioned. Is there some caveats on AD ?  or what ?

    Regards

    Gianluca

  • Hi,

Initially hybrid was designed to move easier to Office365 and still use the functions of the onprem. It is only supported with this topology because of connectivity with AD.

  • Hi ,

does it means that once i will decomission the lync 2010 onprem , doing the forest and domain unprep , i can't install an SfB on-prem for the hybrid anymore ?

    Thanks a lot

  • Hi Gianluca,

    Agree with Erdem,

No,you could remove the online user to the on-premise ,but we donot recommend you to do this , migrate user will lack some attributes caused some troubles.

  • Hey Michael

long time :) , how are you ? thanks for the answer , yes indeed , I had a conversation with some Microsoft folks and they confirmed that is feasible , eventually a little bit complex than following the standard migration path : Lync 2010 -> SfB on prem --> Hybrid SfB Online + SfB On prem .  but still feasible .

Thanks a lot and hope that everything is fine from your side
